Today, society has largely become technical, mechanical, and lacks real
variation and feeling. We see this in the advances in technology and
how it has affected our everyday life, communication, and medicine.
We're literally connected to everyone in the world instantly through
cellular devices, the internet, and satellites. The news comes to us at
all angles with advertisements for anything you may want or need. Kids
and adults alike spend countless hours texting on phones and chatting
on the internet. If one wanted to they could find a chat room on the internet that was full of people exactly like them-ridding themselves of natural variation and communication challenges. This type of communcation is largely in just text format, an abreviated one at best.
It is known that true verbal communication is only
10% the use of text. The other 90 is stature, facial expression,
inflection, tone, gestures, and overall energy. True emotions,
thoughts, indviduality, and personality are lost somewhere in cyperspace along with our ability to express ourselves fully.
Using face to face commuication does increase brain power. When a person primarily uses texting, emails, phone calls, and other forms of electronic communication the body uses the same areas of the brain over and over. But when communication is done face to face many areas of the brain light up, meaning that more areas are stimulated thus developed.
With the steady increase in electronic based connections, I'm not surprised at increased depression rates or the fact that the number one phobia in the United States is public speaking. It can also be argued that this the reason for the fall of the extended family and soon the nuclear family.
We're hoping that everyone will try to make an effort to really talk to someone and listen today. And to be an example for our children. If we all do this more, I think we'll all feel a little better.
Also, I understand that we're using electronic means to pass this information on. We understand its ironic and somewhat hypocritical but its the only way we can get most peoples attention.
