Lately everywhere you turn you hear about Vitamin D and How important it is. What you may not know is why it is so important. Vitamin D plays many roles, it does not just act like a vitamin, but also plays the role of hormone in your body. When masquerading as a hormone vitamin D affects gene transcription. (Transcription is the first step in the process of gene expression.) One of the genes that vitamin D plays a role in is the gene responsible for calcium balance, therefore helps prevent osteoporosis. Another role of Vitamin D is that of cancer fighter, helping in cell differentiation and programmed cell death. Vitamin D helps boost your immune system, and has been shown to be especially beneficial for fighting autoimmune diseases. It has also been shown to regulate blood pressure, preventing hypertension. Having the ability to aid many systems and prevent many ailments this supplement should be at the heart of everyone’s wellness program. So if vitamin D is so beneficial why doesn’t everyone just go take as much as they want? Vitamin D does have a toxic level. Because vitamin D is fat soluble rather than Water soluble it is eliminated more slowly by the body. Having too much vitamin D can cause problems such as hypercalcemia (too much calcium in the blood), hypercalciuria (too much calcium in the urine), hypertension, constipation, and fatigue, to name a few. Therefore it is important to have enough vitamin D, but not too much.
They only way to know where your vitamin D levels are is to get tested, but who really wants to schedule an appointment with their MD to have another vial drawn. Thankfully, there is an easier way. We are now offering blood drop vitamin D testing at Revolution Chiropractic. Blood drop testing works very similar to how a diabetic would check their sugar levels with a finger prick. You take your test kit home, prick your finger and let the blood drop onto the test card. Once you have completed your sample you mail it to the lab and we receive your results in our office. Following testing we are able to know if you get enough Vitamin D from the sun, or if you need added supplementation. Call today to set up a time to pick up your test kit!
